Digital Smile Design

Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a state-of-the-art treatment planning protocol that utilises modern digital technology to plan and customise a person’s smile makeover based on their dental and facial structures. Digital Smile Design gives the patient a chance to view and “test-drive” their smile design and be included in the planning process prior to treatment. It allows us to deliver cosmetic dental procedures such as crowns and veneers to the highest quality possible with great precision. The result is a truly customised, natural and captivating smile specific to each individual’s anatomy and facial appearance.

What does this process involve?

1. A full set of facial and intraoral photographs taken as initial records.

2. A short 2-3 minute video taken while you speak and smile so we can identify from various angles how we can improve your smile.

3. A 2D smile design analysis which kicks off your initial smile design. We provide you with an opportunity to view and modify this design as desired, working in conjunction with our dental ceramists and specialists.

4. We transfer the above 2D design into a 3D mock-up in your mouth. This gives you a chance to “test-drive” your new smile in real time and make any necessary adjustments to the shape or length of your teeth.

5. Once you are happy with the final 3D design, a treatment plan with the costs and duration of treatment will be provided.

6. We begin treatment and the journey towards your new smile!

Digital Smile Design cases are undertaken at StKildadentist by Dr Sergi Miralles BDSc, MDS.

st-kilda-dentistDr Sergi Miralles graduated from the University of Barcelona Dental School (Barcelona, Spain) in 2005. Dr Sergi Miralles went on to receive his master’s degree in Oral Rehabilitation and Maxillofacial Prosthetics whilst completing, with distinction, an Advanced Studies Diploma in Dental Clinical Techniques.

In order to maintain his high levels of continued education, he pursued further advanced training with some of the most renowned dentists worldwide (I.Gamborena, S.Kina, C.Coachman). Additionally, in 2014, Dr Miralles completed the Digital Smile Design Residency becoming a DSD Certified Member. Since then, he has managed the full patient experience of the DSD workflow – from the first consultation/smile simulation to the implementation of the final treatment – including those patients with high-demanding aesthetic/functional requirements seeking for a smile makeover.

After working during the last 15 years as a Specialist Prosthodontist in several practices in Barcelona, and having lectured on DSD and Aesthetic Dentistry, his experience is inclusive of managing all sorts of reconstructive dentistry cases (Full Mouth Rehabilitations, Smile Makeovers, Porcelain Veneers, Implants and Crowns-Bridges-Dentures).

Currently in Melbourne, Dr Miralles is committed to keep providing excellence and innovation to his patients while ensuring their needs are met and exceeded in a compassionate, funny, and pain-free atmosphere.

He also speaks Catalan and Spanish and loves chatting with people from all walks of life. When he is not amongst teeth you can find him off the beaten track either on a cyclo-tourism journey, hiking in untouched valleys, or sailing new shores. Solo, or along with his family, exploring new horizons fuels him up and keeps his inspiration alive.
